Well-chosen herbal teas can have significant health benefits. While herbal teas aren’t the first beverage that comes to mind when discussing health, they do have some under-explored benefits. In fact, regular herbal tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of arterial stiffness, a precursor to cardiovascular disease.

The flavonoids found in herbal teas are particularly important. These bioactive compounds mitigate oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and provide various other health benefits. They also improve blood vessel function and levels of good cholesterol (HDL).

While diet and lifestyle are key factors for good heart health, herbal teas can also help. Here are five wonderful herbal teas that promote heart health.

Onion Tea
Onion tea is little-known, but it has proven to be a valuable ally for heart health. Onions are rich in quercetin, a flavonoid that promotes HDL production and lowers LDL cholesterol. Quercetin, combined with the sulfur in onions, thins the blood and prevents clots. Additionally, these compounds help regulate blood pressure.

Ingredients:

1 chopped onion
2-3 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon of honey
1 to 2 cups of water
Lemon juice (optional)
1 bay leaf (optional)
Instructions:

Bring 1.5 cups of water to a boil.
Add the chopped onion, crushed garlic cloves, and bay leaf to the boiling water.
Let it boil until the water changes color. Strain and serve in a mug.

Consume every morning on an empty stomach for optimal results. An additional cup in the evening is also beneficial.
