  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese

Optional Garnishes:

  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Chopped parsley

Step-by-Step Instructions for Cheesy Baked Gnocchi Casserole

Step 1: Prepare the Gnocchi

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook until they float to the surface (about 2–3 minutes).
  2. Drain the gnocchi and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Tomato Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly to develop its rich flavor.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine.
  6. Season the sauce with oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
  7. Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. Stir in the heavy cream for a luscious, creamy texture.

Step 3: Assemble the Casserole

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce at the bottom.
  3. Add the cooked gnocchi to the dish and gently toss them to coat with the sauce.
  4. Dollop small spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the gnocchi.
  5. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 4: Bake the Casserole

  1. Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  2. For an extra crispy top, broil the casserole for 2–3 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
