  1. Make the meatballs:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper, and milk. Mix until well combined but do not overwork the meat.
    • Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1-1.5 inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until they are cooked through and lightly browned on the outside. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  2. Prepare the tomato sauce:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, and sugar (if using). Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Cook the linguine:
    • While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the linguine and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving a little bit of pasta water.
  4. Assemble the gratinée:
    • Preheat your broiler on high.
    • In a large baking dish, combine the cooked linguine and tomato sauce. Gently toss the pasta to coat it evenly with the sauce.
    • Add the baked meatballs on top of the pasta, then sprinkle both mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the entire dish.
    • Place the baking dish under the broiler for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly with a golden-brown crust.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes.
    • Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve hot.
