Spiders are often unpopular, and one in four French people admit to being afraid of them. When one ventures into our living room, the temptation to get rid of it is strong. However, is it really wise to kill these spiders that take up residence in our homes? Behind their unattractive appearance, these little creatures play an important role, both in our homes and in our gardens.
Spiders, a sign of a healthy home
Spiders are often a sign of a healthy environment. In gardens, the more pollution-free a space is, the more it attracts spiders, which are major consumers of biodiversity. Inside homes, they help get rid of insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and even cockroaches and beetles. Thus, their presence is generally beneficial.
House spiders in France prefer temperate and ventilated areas. They avoid places that are too confined, too hot, or too humid. Their presence in a home can therefore be seen as an indicator of air quality and the general conditions of the habitat.
Spiders, allies against harmful insects.
With over 1,600 species in France, spiders are ubiquitous and useful. On average, they capture the equivalent of one ton of insects per year per hectare. Arachnids are thus highly effective predators, helping to limit insect populations, particularly in our gardens.
