Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably dark)
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 cup whole milk, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water (or hot coffee for a deeper flavor)
For the chocolate buttercream frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (more if needed for consistency)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
1. Prepare the cake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, or line them with parchment paper circles.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well until combined.
- Slowly add the boiling water (or hot coffee) and stir until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but that’s perfectly normal for a moist cake.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
2. Make the chocolate buttercream frosting:
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 1-2 minutes until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until smooth.
- Add the vanilla extract and salt, then beat in the heavy cream one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired frosting consistency.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream; if too thin, add more powdered sugar until it’s fluffy and spreadable.
3. Assemble the cake:
- Once the cakes have completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of one of the cake layers.
- Place the second cake layer on top and press down gently.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining chocolate buttercream frosting, smoothing it out with a spatula or knife.
4. Decorate and serve:
- For an extra touch, you can decorate the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or a drizzle of chocolate ganache.
- Slice, serve, and enjoy the most decadent, moist, and chocolaty cake you’ll ever taste!
This Best Chocolate Cake is super moist, rich in chocolate flavor, and topped with a luscious chocolate buttercream frosting. It’s perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply indulging in the ultimate chocolate treat!
