Prepare the Salisbury Steak Mixture:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
Form the Patties:
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into oval patties.
Cook the Patties:
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Mushroom Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and chopped onion. Sauté until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir to combine. Cook for an additional minute.
- Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the soy sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken for about 3-4 minutes.
Combine and Serve:
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer together for a couple of minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
