Instructions

  1. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Lay out 4 slices of bread and spread Dijon mustard (if using) on one side.
    • Place a slice of Gruyère cheese and a slice (or two) of ham on each piece of bread.
    • Top with the remaining bread slices to make sandwiches.
  2. Prepare the Custard:
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. Dip the Sandwiches:
    • Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Dip each sandwich into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are coated, but avoid soaking too long to prevent sogginess.
  4. Cook the French Toast Sandwiches:
    • Place the dipped sandwiches into the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  5. Optional Béchamel Sauce (for serving):
    • In a small saucepan, melt 2 tbsp butter over medium heat.
    • Stir in 2 tbsp all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute.
    • Gradually whisk in 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk, stirring until thickened.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Spoon the sauce over the sandwiches.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar for a sweet-savory contrast or with a drizzle of honey.

This Croque-Monsieur French Toast is a luxurious and satisfying dish that will impress anyone at the table!
