– 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
– 4 tablespoons unsalted butter in slices
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Begin by preparing the onions. Peel the onions and slice them thinly to ensure even cooking. A mandoline slicer can be handy for this step, but a sharp knife will do just fine.
2. Once your onions are sliced, place them in the slow cooker. Season to taste and toss.
3. Spread butter pats over yellow onions.
4. Set your slow cooker to the LOW setting and cook the onions for 10 hours or high for 5 hours.
5. After 10 hours, if you find excess moisture in the pot, you might want to cook the onions uncovered for an additional 30-45 minutes to allow some of the liquid to evaporate and the onions to gain more color.
6. Stir the onions occasionally throughout the cooking process to ensure they caramelize evenly.
7. Once the onions have turned a deep golden brown and are sweetly fragrant, they are ready to be served. Allow them to cool slightly before transferring them to a dish or incorporating them into your chosen meal.
8. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
Enjoy your Slow Cooker Caramelized Onions as the star of myriad culinary creations, or as a simple, delectable side dish that adds a gourmet touch to everyday meals.
