This tip will help you know if the food in your freezer is safe to eat or if it should be thrown out immediately, and it’s also helpful if you’re going to be away from home for an extended period of time.
A cup, a coin and some tap water—three common but useful items that everyone has at home—are the secret ingredient.
In a Facebook post that quickly received hundreds of thousands of reactions and shares, Sheila explains how to do it. She writes:
“For those of you evacuating the coast, I just heard a great tip. It’s called the cup tip. You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it completely, then put a coin on top and leave it in your freezer. That way, when you come back after evacuating, you’ll be able to tell if your food is completely spoiled and has just been refrozen or if it’s been frozen while you were gone.
If the coin has fallen to the bottom of the cup, it means that all the food has thawed and you should throw it away. But if the coin is either at the top or in the middle of the cup, then your food might still be okay. It would also be wise to leave this system in your freezer all the time and if you lose power for any reason, you will have this tip at your disposal.

If you are unsure about the quality of your food, throw it out. The main thing is that everyone is safe.
