For the Glaze (Optional):
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Stir until evenly mixed.
- Gradually add the warm milk, melted butter, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Make the Apple Filling
- In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir well to combine.
- Cook the mixture for 5–7 minutes until the apples are softened and the juices have thickened slightly. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
Step 3: Assemble the Rolls
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle (about 16×12 inches).
- Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border along the edges.
- Starting from the longer side, roll the dough tightly into a log.
- Pinch the seam to seal, then cut the log into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife or dental floss.
Step 4: Proof and Bake
- Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll for expansion.
- Cover with a towel and let them rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and fragrant.
