Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
- Dirty dish sponges
- Washing machine detergent (a regular liquid or powder works fine)
- An optional small mesh laundry bag or pillowcase (to protect the sponge)
Step 2: Prepare the Sponges
- Rinse the Sponge
Run the sponge under warm water and squeeze it several times to remove excess food particles and grease. This step ensures your washing machine doesn’t get clogged. - Inspect for Damage
Check the sponge for wear and tear. If it’s falling apart, it might be time to replace it rather than clean it.
Step 3: Place the Sponge in the Machine
- Use a Mesh Bag (Optional)
Place the sponge in a small mesh laundry bag or pillowcase to prevent it from snagging on other items or the machine drum. - Load Other Laundry (Optional)
To save energy and water, you can throw in a load of towels or cleaning cloths. Avoid adding clothes, as the sponge might transfer grease or residue.
Step 4: Add Detergent
- Measure the Detergent
Add the usual amount of detergent you use for a regular load. You don’t need anything special—standard detergent works well to break down grease and kill germs. - Avoid Fabric Softener
Skip fabric softeners, as they can leave a residue on the sponge that affects its cleaning ability.
Step 5: Select the Right Settings
- Set to Hot Water
Hot water is essential for killing bacteria and loosening grease embedded in the sponge fibers. - Choose a Gentle Cycle
Use a gentle or regular cycle to ensure the sponge is thoroughly cleaned without being damaged.
