Ingredients for Chicken Broccoli Casserole

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups (about 400g) cooked chicken, shredded or cubed
  • 4 cups broccoli florets, fresh or frozen
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup (240ml) sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup (120ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Topping

  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Tools You’ll Need

  • A large mixing bowl
  • A 9×13-inch baking dish
  • A medium saucepan
  • A whisk
  • A spatula or spoon

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set it aside.

Step 2: Cook the Broccoli

If using fresh broccoli, blanch it by boiling for 2–3 minutes, then transferring it to an ice bath to retain its bright green color and crisp-tender texture. Drain well. For frozen broccoli, thaw and pat dry.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Heat over medium-low until smooth and warmed through. Remove from heat.

Step 4: Combine the Base

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked chicken, broccoli, and prepared sauce. Mix gently to coat everything evenly.

Step 5: Assemble the Casserole

Spread the chicken and broccoli mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

Step 6: Prepare the Topping

In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs or crushed crackers with the melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cheese layer.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection

Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.
